JüRGEN SEIFERT - GERMANY, OCTOBER 2007

Jürgen submitted this article in pictures, relating his hunts, as well as sharing some lovely scenery with us.

To get a good start you have to be up and ready to go by sunrise.

A picture of mine from last year with some prey. As you can see, it is still from the “Lead-Ages”, these dark times before the “Copper-Ages”.

We have on one hand typically wide, open fields (not nearly as wide as in South Africa, of course) where usually crops are grown: Wheat, corn, rye, barley…. Wild boar love to be in these crop fields, causing a lot of damage (and irate farmers).

Forests are pretty wide-spread too. You can find all our domestic game in there (no dangerous game any more).

I had an unbelievable hunting trip to Sweden. It was my first time and since chances to get a moose in Sweden are slim, I was lucky nonetheless the very first day.

The guide said it was a 2 to 3-year-old cow of approximately 200 kg live weight. I used the 308130HV in my 30-06 Blaser R93, as I did for most of the 20 other kills this year before the moose. Again, the HV proved its superiority. I hit the animal, walking away from me at quite some pace at a distance of about 50m, a little high near the backbone behind the shoulder. It dropped like a stone; the bullet of course went through and, as far as I could tell, meat damage was again minimal. This was by far the biggest game animal that I had killed and there was no surprise whatsoever.

This Wild Boar male was shot at 170m with a 30-06 Blaser R93, using the 130gr HV.  The picture shows an almost perfect mushroom effect.  The boar weighed 80kg.

Joint hunting is usually done with dogs in groups. This is a typical harvest of mainly wild boar.

Hunting booth. The one shown is typical here, used in open field and forests. It is similar to the American tree stand, but it is a self-supporting construction not needing a tree. There are many different types, roofed, unroofed, stand-ladders, mobile ones and so on.

Reh-Buck (pictured below) is our most common game besides wild boar. It grows to 25 kg in size and is related to the American white tail deer although much smaller. It is not to be mistaken for the European Red Deer which is much rarer and grows to 200 kg and has nice antlers. The European Red Deer is closely related to the N-American or Canadian Wapiti.

A lovely way to finish off the day - watching the sunset over open fields.
