Good Guys and Bad Guys

Who is ripping us off and making life difficult and who can we rely on for help.

Bad Guys

When flying with a defensive side arm or hunting/sporting rifle, these airlines will not be very helpful:

Kulula.com state on their website:  Firearms simply can't be accommodated on our flights. Please make alternative arrangements to transport these bad boys.

British Air / Comair state on their website that handguns, sporting guns and hunting rifles will be transported if they are notified in advance. Three phone calls to the Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town offices brought the advice that the website is wrong and that no firearms can be transported. Update: On 28/02/05 Gunlinks was informed that sporting firearms will be accepted by prior arrangement. Handguns wil not be transported under any circumstances. Is the Bad Guy rating still justified? Probably, if we maintain all for one and one for all.

Recently, I wanted to have a rifle brought from Vryheid in KZN to Port Elizabeth. I phoned a number of couriers and none were licensed to carry firearms. Maxi Loads was then recommended and a call to them resulted in a quote of R500.00 to transport the firearm. I told them to take a running jump and continued the search. I had to get two companies to go from Vryheid to PE but together the final cost was R196.00. Maxi Loads will not get any business from me, ever.

Good Guys

South African Airways will transport your hunting/sporting rifles at the same rates as any other sporting equipment. It is essentially the same as the excess baggage rate. There is a 5kg limit on ammunition. Handguns are transported only if checked in with Airport Security and are transported at a fee of R100.00. Does this make them one of the Good Guys? Not quite sure but it is the lesser of several evils.

The courier to use for firearms in KZN is Express Couriers. They brought a firearm from Vryheid to Durban for under R50.00 and from there to PE it was transported by a firearms distributor who have their own transport service.
