9.3 x 62 Mauser
This cartridge from the first decade of the 1900s is still hard to beat in many respects. The most common loading is a jacketed lead bullet of 286 grains with which 2300 to 2400 fps is achieved. Terminal ballistics with such loads is outstanding, as bullets are not overly stressed and deliver excellent weight retention and penetration.
The downside of this calibre is that its limitations with jacketed lead ammunition kicks in at just over 200 metres. Beyond that range, trajectory, wind drift and time of flight become very real obstacles that make precise shot placement very difficult. Additionally, momentum and energy at 200 metres become alarmingly low.
We believe that one should not make life unneccesarily difficult for oneself and set out to find ways of improving shot placement through improved external ballistics that are now possible with HV bullets. Taking into account the limited case capacity and CIP twist specification of one turn in 14.2 inches, we developed the 230gr HV bullet resulting in the external ballistics below.
The effective range of the 9.3x62 is improved by 50 metres. Wind drift is reduced by two thirds and, at 300 metres, momentum is up by 24%, energy is up by 93% and time of flight is reduced by 26%.
