Impala
Of a
Lifetime
Calibre: 9.3 X 62.
Bullet:
GS Custom HV 260gr.
Speed:
2500 fps.
Dressed
out
weight:
52 kg
Right
horn: 25
1/2 "
Left
horn: 26
1/4 "
(The side
that seems
shorter).
This
Impala was
taken at
80 metres
with an
oblique
frontal
shot. The
bullet
entered
centre on
the chest
and exited
just in
front of
the right
back leg.
Exit hole
was about
2" in
diameter.
Meat
damage was
low, as
usual.
The Impala dropped where it stood even though no bones or cns elements were hit. The previous day I shot a smaller ram that passed at 120 metres perfectly broadside. I aimed for a neck shot and, leading by a small amount, hit the spot exactly as I wanted to. I was quite proud of my follow through. Once again no bone was hit but all the arteries and the trachea were cut. There is something to be said for larger calibres having a more instantaneous effect as well as being more reliable for one shot knock downs. I also use a 10.75 with HV bullets and a friend of mine, who has been hunting with us for several seasons, commented:."It seems like everything you shoot at just falls down" It helps if you use the right tools for the job. |
